Aitzpea Leizaola Egaña

Aitzpea Leizaola Egaña (San Sebastián) is Professor of Anthropology at the University of the Basque Country /Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. Between 2004 and 2005, she was director of the Basque Summer University.

She holds degrees in Anthropology and Linguistics from the universities of Paris X and La Sorbonne. There she also pursued postgraduate studies in both fields of knowledge. She received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Paris Nanterre, in 2010, with a doctoral thesis entitled Muga – Frontière, identité et territoire au Pays Basque. She has carried out postgraduate stays in foreign universities and research centres such as the Freie Universität in Berlin, Queen’s University in Belfast and the Basque Studies Center at the University of Reno (Nevada). In the academic year 2000-01 she was a visiting lecturer at the European Studies Center of St Antony’s College, University of Oxford (Basque Visiting Fellow).

Previously, she has also worked for the Aranzadi Science Society on the Zaharkiñak project, which was carried out in different towns in Gipuzkoa.

She specialised in European anthropology and his main research interests are identity, nationality and border studies, within political anthropology, memory and heritage. She has carried out her fieldwork in the Basque Country, Spain and Turkey.

She has published several articles and book chapters in Basque, French, English and Spanish in international journals such as European Ethnology, Ethnologie française. She is a member of the editorial team of the journal Ankulegi.

During 2017 and 2019 she has been a member of the academic commission of the Ikergazte congress in the area of humanities and art.
