Marian Orjuela

Marian is a sociologist, pre-doctoral researcher at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Master in Sociology at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. She is currently a member of the Research Group of the Centre for Ibero-American Studies at the University of Heidelberg (HCIAS) and coordinates the area of publications and scholarly communication at HCIAS. In recent years, she has received additional training in human rights, science communication and health from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Latin American and Caribbean Centre for Health Sciences Information (BIREME) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Her research approach is interdisciplinary in nature and focuses on the sociology of social inequalities, gender studies, sociology of risk and health, social movement studies and communication for social change.
Her PhD project analyses women’s high-risk leadership in the Amazon region of Colombia, primarily in the pursuit of gender justice by women environmental and human rights defenders in contexts of multiple violence, conflict and stigma.
