Mauricio Chama

Mauricio Chama holds a Master’s degree in Social Sciences (FLACSO-Buenos Aires-Argentina) and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology (University of Buenos Aires). He is Associate Professor of General Sociology and Classical Social Theory I, at the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences of the National University of La Plata, where he also teaches postgraduate courses in the area of social theory.

He is a researcher at the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (UNLP-CONICET) and is currently the director of the research project “La causa militante: perspectivas analíticas para el estudio del pasado reciente argentino”. He was co-director of the project “Aportes para repensar la trayectoria de la “nueva izquierda (1955-1976): estrategias, rupturas y reagrupamientos” and participated in numerous projects based in different Argentine public universities.

His research has focused on the analysis of socio-historical processes of the recent past and studies on memory in Argentina. Within this field of problems, he specialised in the analysis of processes of activation, politicisation and radicalisation of professional groups, such as lawyers and psychologists in the 1960s and 1970s in Argentina, the results of which were reflected in the publication of a book and numerous chapters and articles in specialised journals. He has also studied the relationship between social memory, politics and academic-intellectual production in post-dictatorship Argentina, a subject on which he has published several chapters and articles in national and international journals.

In addition, he published several essays, chapters and teaching materials on classical social theory, currently being the director of the Colección Clásicos en Plural (ediciones Pluriverso-FaHCE-UNLP). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Revista Sociohistórica and the Revista Cuestiones de Sociología and has worked as an evaluator of articles in national and foreign social science journals, as well as evaluator of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships, research projects, special programmes and institutional evaluation projects. He has also participated as a consultant and member of various commissions for the creation of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and the reform of curricula. In the field of university management, he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences between 2012 and 2022.
