His research work can be summarised in 4 lines of research.
- Political sociology: national identities and electoral behaviour. The doctoral thesis (1999), on nationalism and social structure, gives meaning to the axis and from it derives knowledge interests in other axes. In this line, he has published 5 articles and 7 chapters, and presented 2 communications. He has participated in 1 funded research project.
- Political sociology: civic and social participation. The line of work focused on associations and volunteering, but also on social participation in public policies at the local level. In this field, he has published 3 articles, 3 books and 1 chapter and presented 4 communications. He has participated in 2 funded projects.
- Sociology of culture. He analyses sociolinguistic relations in particular, but also includes research on cultural practices. The advances in sociolinguistic knowledge have been substantiated in his appointment in 2012 as director of the Servei de Política Lingüística de la Universitat de València, a responsibility he still holds. In this line, he has published 4 articles, 3 books and 2 chapters and presented 7 communications. He has participated in 6 funded research projects.
- Social structure, precariousness of life and inequality. Focused on social inequalities (in various areas of social life) and life precariousness (components and evolution). He has been working in this area since 1998; however, it gained strength in 2009, with the participation in the research on vital precariousness (CSO2008-00886/SOCI), funded by the Ministry and directed by Benjamín Tejerina, and with the assumption of the direction of the master’s degree in “Sociology and Anthropology of Public Policies” at the Universitat de València. In this field, he has published 3 articles and 2 chapters and presented 7 communications. He has participated in 4 funded projects.
His methodological skills include the use of various multivariate techniques: analysis of variance, multiple linear regression, binomial and multinomial logistic regression, correspondence analysis, factor analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis, among the most relevant. He has also applied content analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, and discourse analysis in interviews and focus groups. Recently, he has incorporated social network analysis into its instruments.
