Joseba García Martín

Joseba García Martín holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology (2013) and a Master’s Degree in “Models and Areas of Research in Social Sciences” (2014) from the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU). PhD in Sociology (2020) from the UPV/EHU with a thesis entitled “Religion, politics and deprivatisation strategies: the mobilisation of Christian-inspired secular groups in the Spanish state” (Cum Laude, International Thesis) under the direction of Benjamín Tejerina. During his pre-doctoral stage (2019) he stayed at El Colegio de México (COLMEX) in the framework of the EGONLABUR programme. He has been a beneficiary of the Basque Government’s Non-Doctoral Research Staff Training Programme (FPI) (2016-2020) and Contracted Research Staff (PIC) (2021) at the Centre for Studies on Collective Identity/Identitate Kolektiboen Ikertegia (CEIC/IKI) attached to the Department of Sociology and Social Work of the UPV/EHU. He was a Margarita Salas Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Research in Sociology of Religion (ISOR) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and now is a posdoctoral researcher at the University of Dublin.
His main interests articulate concepts such as social mobilisation, Catholicism, cultural change, conservatism and secularisation, and are focused on research that analyses the renewed strategies of conservative Catholicism to confront processes of cultural and political change. He is currently researching conservative mobilisations against the current euthanasia law in Spain. His most recent publications are:
